It will take them 80 years to change the heat pipes in Bucharest. The election campaign promises were lies.

The Foundation for the Defense of the Citizen Against State Abuses (FACIAS) believes it is the duty of civil society to check how city mayors are fulfilling their commitments to the citizens who voted for them.

For this reason, FACIAS has asked the City Hall and the Municipal Company Termoenergetica to communicate the status of the work to replace the hot water and heating pipes, and to explain how and when the citizens of Bucharest will have these services at the standards promised during the electoral campaign.

The malfunctioning of the heating system, the numerous and frequent breakdowns and the huge losses are harming citizens and violating their rights.

Losses in the heating system amount to hundreds of millions of RON every year, money that taxpayers pay indirectly.

The time it takes to change all the pipes is longer than the average lifespan in Romania

Termoenergetica's response to FACIAS's request shows that the situation of the district heating system is far below standard and the quality of services leaves much to be desired. The municipal company admits that so far it has carried out replacement works on heating pipes over a distance of just over 100 km, while the total network, primary and secondary, is almost 4000 km long. A simple mathematical calculation shows that, at the current rate of 50 km per year on average, the entire system would be replaced in no less than 80 years, given that the average lifespan in Romania is 75 years. This ridiculous timeframe is prompting citizens and civil society alike to sound the alarm and call for an urgent change in the way things are done.

FACIAS recalls that the proper functioning of the heating system was one of the main promises of the current administration of the capital. FACIAS will also take all possible legal steps to ensure that the rights and interests of citizens are respected.

Residents of Bucharest who have suffered or are suffering from a lack of heat and hot water can join FACIAS by reporting the situation to [email protected].
