Following the complaint filed by the Foundation for the Defense of Citizens Against State Abuses, prosecutors decided to initiate a criminal investigation against persons with decision-making powers within the "Marie Curie" Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, for possible acts of abuse of office, negligence in office and manslaughter.
FACIAS notified the prosecutor's office regarding information published in the press according to which, in the last six years, 150 babies died while waiting for a bed at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the "Marie Curie" Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest.
FACIAS requested DNA to investigate this information, and prosecutors ordered the initiation of investigations regarding the management of the "Marie Curie" Hospital and other officials with responsibilities in unblocking employment positions and organizing job competitions for this medical unit. The criminal investigation will be conducted further by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Court of the 4th District.
FACIAS mentions that the order received from the Prosecutor General's Office does not indicate the names of the hospital management or other officials whose conduct is to be verified.
FACIAS notified the prosecutor's office on the 29th July, 2026, following public statements by doctor Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the "Marie Curie" Hospital. The doctor reported that the deaths of children on the waiting list occurred between 2020 and 2026. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu explained that the shortage of nurses in this unit limited the number of critically ill children that the medical team could receive and treat to only 22 authorized beds.
FACIAS will monitor the investigation into the deaths of new-borns waiting for a bed at the Neonatal ICU of the "Marie Curie" Hospital. FACIAS demands that those responsible be held accountable.
