Romania's transplant crisis is worsening and the consequences are devastating. Between 2020 and 2023, no less than 426 people died waiting for a transplant that never came. It is a stark reality that shows the failure of our medical system in the face of a critical situation.
The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has launched the "Call for Life" campaign to bring this alarming situation to the attention of the public and the authorities. Recently, at the request of FACIAS, the National Transplant Agency (ANT) provided concrete data on the transplant situation in Romania. Unfortunately, the figures are extremely worrying and highlight the scale of the health crisis we are facing. According to the data provided, only 1091 transplants were carried out between 2020 and 2023. The number of people on waiting lists has almost tripled to 2730. In concrete terms, one in three Romanians is condemned to death if there is no health reform.
FACIAS requests for a specific action plan
FACIAS calls for concrete and urgent measures to be taken by the Ministry of Health to resolve this crisis. A clear action plan is needed to improve the transplantation process in Romania. The Ministry must take effective measures and allocate adequate resources to ensure a steady and rapid flow of transplant procedures. FACIAS demands:
Ensure adequate support for patients: Patients in need of a transplant must have access to information and counselling services, as well as financial support to cover the costs associated with the procedure.
Strategies for reducing waiting times: Waiting times for transplants must be drastically reduced. The Ministry of Health must implement effective strategies to optimise the procurement and transplantation process so that every patient has the chance to receive a transplant on time.
Awareness and education campaigns: organ donation is a selfless act that can save lives. The Ministry of Health must organise public awareness and education campaigns to encourage organ donation and change perceptions and attitudes.
The transplant crisis can no longer be ignored! The Government and the Ministry of Health must act and take concrete steps to save lives. FACIAS will continue to fight for the rights of these patients and closely monitor the actions of the Ministry of Health to solve the transplant crisis in Romania.
