The Foundation for the Defense of the Citizen Against State Abuses (FACIAS) wanted to know the status of European funding for railway infrastructure in Romania and whether our country meets the conditions required by the European Union. To this end, FACIAS sent a request to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and found out where the money from the NRRP goes, but also what amounts Romania has received so far for rail transport. According to the reply received, so far Romania has opened works to be settled amounting to approximately €175 million for projects concerning railway infrastructure. Unfortunately, however, so far, our country has only managed to attract 23 million, 7 times less than the proposed target. The only projects for which Romania has attracted European funding through the NRRP were for the works started in the west of the country, the electrification and rehabilitation of the Cluj Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor railway, about 9 million, and the modernisation of the Caransebeș - Timișoara - Arad railway line, about 14 million. More than 1000 km of railway track is being modernised The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is currently carrying out projects involving investment in the modernisation, renewal or electrification of more than 700 km of railway track. Thus, in addition to the two projects for which they have managed to obtain European funding, 315 km, the ministry has already signed the first contracts for the renewal of the railway lines on the Bucharest-Pitești (198 km) and Reșița-Voiteni (65 km) sections, for the electrification and renewal of the Constanța-Mangalia (43 km) and Videle-Giurgiu (67 km) sections. At the same time, the Ministry of Transport is carrying out Quick Wins projects on about 400 km, which concern one-off works to remove speed restrictions and increase safety on the railways. FACIAS will continue to monitor the implementation of the NRRP to ensure that Romania attracts as much funding as possible and that the money is spent correctly.
