The Foundation for the Defence of Citizens Against State Abuses is calling for urgent investigations at the "Prof. Dr. Panait Sîrbu" Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinical Hospital - Giulesti Maternity Hospital and at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, following the death of a 36-year-old patient. The patient's family accuses the medical staff of ignoring the woman's serious symptoms and that the doctors attributed the pain that preceded her death to a panic attack.
According to family reports and media reports, the patient went to the Giulesti Maternity Hospital with amniotic fluid leakage. Doctors admitted her on the 4th of June, 2026, and she remained in hospital for approximately two weeks. During this time, doctors performed a cerclage to maintain the pregnancy.
Although the medical record explicitly mentioned the risk of miscarriage, the hospital discharged the patient on the 17th of June. Less than 24 hours after the discharge, the woman's condition deteriorated. The patient experienced chills, bleeding and severe pain, and an ambulance transported her back to the Giulesti Maternity Hospital. The family claims that the same doctor who had discharged her took her in and attributed the patient's symptoms to a panic attack. According to relatives, the medical staff only administered painkillers, and the woman's condition rapidly deteriorated. During surgery, doctors found uterine necrosis and decided to remove her uterus. Subsequently, the Giulesti Maternity Hospital transferred the patient to the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, where the woman died a few hours after the transfer.
According to information published in the press, the medical-legal certificate mentions as causes of death a severe chorioamniotitis, followed by uterine necrosis, septicaemia and multiple organ failure. These conclusions describe a serious infection that evolved and caused the patient's death. Public reports also mention that the two foetuses died in utero. The family considers that doctors should have detected and treated the infection in time.
Following these tragic circumstances, FACIAS requested the Giulesti Maternity Hospital and the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital to publicly communicate the results of the investigations carried out. At the same time, FACIAS notified the Bucharest Municipality Public Health Directorate and requested it to launch an investigation into this case.
FACIAS notified the College of Physicians of Bucharest, requesting the identification of the persons guilty of failing to comply with the medical procedures in force and the application of disciplinary sanctions provided for by law.
The current procedure for resolving medical malpractice cases has repeatedly proven ineffective. In practice, malpractice cases are rarely found and victims are often left without compensation within a reasonable time. In order to correct these shortcomings, FACIAS has developed a draft law aimed at a new procedure that would help victims obtain actual compensation provided in a timely manner. After completing consultations with partner patient associations and experts in the field, FACIAS will submit the draft law to the Parliament for adoption.
