The Foundation for the Defence of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has notified prosecutors following shocking information appearing in the public space, according to which 150 children have died in the last six years, while waiting for a "bed" at the Intensive Care Unit of the "Marie Curie" Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest. FACIAS calls on prosecutors to determine the persons responsible for the tragedy and hold them accountable.
According to statements by Dr Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, as of the 25th of July, 150 children have died in the last six years while waiting for an intensive care bed at the "MS Curie" Hospital. The doctor stated that two of these children died in the last two weeks, before they could be transferred, and another seven new-borns in serious condition were on the waiting list.
The same information shows that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was operating in excess of its legal capacity. The doctor stated that the unit had 22 authorized beds and five more children were admitted in addition to that number. He also explained that the staff shortage was affecting the unit's ability to take in and treat new critically ill patients.
In the submitted notification, FACIAS asked prosecutors to verify this data, to establish the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to identify the institutions and individuals who knew about the situation, yet failed to act.
FACIAS will follow this case until the competent institutions determine who is responsible for the deaths of these children and explain how it was possible for the authorities to turn a blind eye for so many years and not take any measures to prevent new deaths.
