The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS), campaigning for the rights of all citizens in Romania, has carried out a series of actions regarding people serving custodial sentences who have suffered abuses by the state.
Specifically, in the context of the epidemic that Romania is facing, Decree No 195/2020 established a state of emergency and provides for a series of exceptional measures imposed during this period. Some of these measures concern Justice (Annex 1, Chapter V), and in this case there are measures that have considerably restricted the exercise of some rights of persons serving sentences and custodial measures. One such right is the right to visit, which has been completely suspended.
FACIAS has asked the National Prison Authority, the Romanian Government, the Minister of Justice and the People's Advocate to take legal measures to ensure that the rights of these categories of persons are also respected, in compliance with the rules of protection and health safety.
FACIAS, in line with its mission, closely monitors the respect of the rights of all Romanian citizens, regardless of their category.
