2025 Romania hides a painful reality: almost 55% of the elderly population is not only living a hard life, but is fighting a daily struggle for survival. Out of the 4,692,612 officially registered pensioners, a huge segment has been left on the edge of society, transformed from a respectable social category into a vulnerable one, dependent on help to make it through tomorrow.

The scale of the disaster is shown by the overwhelming statistics: for 924,000 elderly people, existence is limited to a minimum benefit of 1,281 lei, which means ONLY 42 lei a day to live on. They are joined by another 1.7 million pensioners trying to survive on incomes of 2,574 lei or less. These tiny amounts cannot cover the huge gaps in a single person's budget, given that, according to the latest data, the minimum consumption basket for an adult person in Romania has reached 4,322 lei.

This huge gap between income and real needs is no longer just an economic problem, but a crisis that is deepening every day. Thus, old age in Romania has become synonymous with giving up, deprivation and isolation. The Romanian state's indifference towards the situation of the elderly is more than a lack of reaction. It is an abuse, tolerated over time, which strikes mercilessly precisely at the most vulnerable section of society: Romania's grandparents.

Trapped in a bureaucratic maze, many seniors are unaware of their rights and do not have the resources to challenge administrative errors, becoming certain victims of negligence. For them, a wrong pension decision is not a simple miscalculation, but the sentence of choosing between food and medicine every month. Faced with these cruel realities, FACIAS is NOT indifferent.

FACIAS assumes its role as an advocate for the elderly in the face of state abuses and the restoration of dignity to Romania's seniors. It becomes the voice of those who cannot represent themselves. We provide free legal assistance and initiate collective lawsuits to correct systemic administrative abuses affecting pensions, access to social services and fundamental rights. The aim is to ensure that no bureaucratic error goes unchallenged.

A moral and civic duty

For FACIAS, defending seniors is a natural continuation of the organization's mission to protect citizens from state abuses and to intervene where institutions fail to provide real support. Romania's grandparents are the ones who built this country, worked for decades and paid contributions, and the fact that today they are abandoned in poverty and loneliness is a profound injustice that we cannot tolerate.

"Respect and Gratitude for Seniors" is FACIAS' response to a systemic abuse and a public call to restore dignity to the elderly in Romania.

When state institutions fail to fulfill their role, FACIAS intervenes to give seniors back what they deserve and have been denied: respect, protection, recognition and the right to a dignified life.
