PRESS RELEASE
Data: 29.09.2023
The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has asked the Ministry of Transport to check the expropriation procedures of the subordinate road company - CNAIR, after several citizens complained to FACIAS about absurd and abusive expropriation decisions by those who intend to build roads on their property. The response of the Ministry of Transport betrays the indifference with which they treat this case, and this is causing significant damage to citizens.
The story is an outrageous one: land wrongfully expropriated by CNAIR, compensation deferred or compensation values that do not reflect the reality of the market. In some cases, after brutal expropriation, land has been returned in a deplorable state or, even worse, with a drastically reduced value due to unjustified interventions. This is what citizens are complaining to FACIAS in the "It's my right" campaign. FACIAS has taken the natural decision to approach the Ministry of Transport, asking it to intervene and check a company under its control. The mission was simple: to launch an investigation and uncover the truth behind the allegations and shed light on the case.
The Ministry replied to FACIAS, explaining that everything was fine, that the expropriations had been carried out according to procedures. But in fact the answer was from CNAIR, not the Ministry. How did we find out? By the fact that although the reply was received from the Ministry of Transport, it was on CNAIR's letterhead. Basically, instead of verifying the accusations made by citizens and taking action to remedy the situation and sanction those responsible, the Ministry of Transport redirected the FACIAS request directly to CNAIR. What could the accused have responded to?
CNAIR is one of the companies wasting the most money from the state budget, about 25 million euros wasted on pre/feasibility studies left unused, projects that have not been completed even today. FACIAS is running the campaign "Turn off the waste tap", a campaign to raise public awareness and combat the gross waste of public money in Romania.
Indifference or bad faith?
The Ministry of Transport's reaction is an attempt to avoid responsibility and hide the truth. When a key government ministry chooses to redirect such an important issue back to the entity directly accused of wrongdoing, it means the system is either flawed or possibly corrupt.
FACIAS calls on the Ministry of Transport, as a specialised body of the central public administration, to actively fulfil its duties and to monitor the work of its subordinate public institutions. The request has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport in order to have the abuses reported by citizens checked, not just to ask CNAIR whether or not they have done their job.
FACIAS helps citizens fight state abuses
FACIAS's "It's my right" campaign is a tool of FACIAS to help citizens who face abuses by state institutions. They can email [email protected] with details of the situation they are facing and FACIAS undertakes to analyse each case and report abuses to the state authorities responsible for dealing with them.
