The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has revealed the catastrophic manner in which the National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR) is addressing the matter of hundreds of millions of euros in compensation for the incomplete roads. In response to an official query, CNAIR has asserted that it is not their responsibility to identify and hold accountable the officials responsible for the significant damages incurred by the Romanian state.

Huge sums paid without any accountability measures

From 2015 to 2024, CNAIR has been required to pay approximately €533 million in damages as a consequence of litigation losses resulting from the actions of CNAIR employees. Nevertheless, CNAIR has not taken any action to identify and hold accountable the officials who contributed to this damage. In a subsequent communication, FACIAS requested information from CNAIR regarding the measures taken to recover the damages and to sanction the officials responsible. In response, CNAIR provided a response that was, to say the least, somewhat disappointing. It was stated that it was not the case to identify the guilty parties or to recover the damages. This stance is difficult to comprehend, particularly given the considerable financial implications of the damages, which exceed half a billion euros.

FACIAS calls for urgent government intervention

It is evident that the reported situation will inevitably give rise to consequences. The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) requests that the Ministry of Transportation and the Romanian Government take immediate action and implement tangible measures to:

  1. Identify and hold responsible officials to account:
  • Those responsible for the misappropriation of €533 million of public funds must be identified and held to account.
  1. Damage recovery:
  • It is incumbent upon the Romanian state to pursue every avenue to recover the sums paid as compensation for the incompetence of officials.

The campaign, entitled "Turn off the Waste Tap!", has as its objective the dissemination of information to citizens regarding the expenditure of public funds and the necessity for change in order to halt this process. It is the intention of FACIAS to continue to support citizens and to oppose any abuse of state power.
