There is no country in the European Union where there are no problems with the rule of law or respect for citizens' rights, but a collaborative effort between civil society and officials can be the answer. These are just some of the most important conclusions drawn after the conference "Ensuring the rule of law in EU countries - challenges and solutions" at the European Parliament, organised and moderated by MEP Maria Grapini, in collaboration with The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS).

During the conference, important steps were taken on the road to partnership between FACIAS and the European institutions, which responded positively to FACIAS's proposal to create a mechanism or platform to facilitate interaction between civil society and European officials. This proposal was also welcomed by the main speaker of the conference, Fernando Lopez Aguilar, Chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), who expressed his full support.

Alongside the EP official, the guests included representatives of the European Commission, Annelice Șerban, Romanian Consul to the Kingdom of Belgium, Cătălin Necula, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Daniela Morari, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the EU, MEP Steluța Cătăniciu, President of the Committee on Abuses in the Romanian Parliament, Nicolin Mugurel Chivu, Head of Unit in the Permanent Representation of Romania to the EU, representatives of FACIAS - Professor Victor Alistar, and Liliana Filip, Partnership Coordinator for FACIAS.

At Wednesday's event FACIAS presented to European officials its report on the respect of citizens' rights in Romania in 2023, and discussions concluded that such a report would be useful to be carried out in each of the Member States. Such an approach would be essential to understand the realities within the Union, stressed Victor Alistar.

We need to understand exactly what brought us to this situation, what made us reach this level of Euroscepticism", concluded lawyer Victor Alistar, former member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates.
