Romania currently has more than seven million doses of Covid vaccinations in stock, which will expire in the coming months. The population immunization rate has dropped to around 11,000 doses per week, which suggests that stocks will run out in 13 years, given that vaccines have a shelf life of six months.

According to National Institute of Public Health data, only 11,637 doses were administered during the week of March 28-April 3, 2022. Most of them were booster doses (7,079), followed by the second dose (3,026), while only 1,532 Romanians received the first dose. And, even if this rate of vaccination is maintained, which is projected to drop, it will take 13 years to consume the seven million doses of vaccine currently in stock, assuming a six-month validity period. Nobody in the government knows what will happen to these doses, which were paid for with millions of dollars from the public budget.

The Romanian government is wasting billions of euros because Covid vaccines will inevitably be destroyed, as due to the same cause, one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine have already been destroyed after they have passed their expiration date. Countries around the world don’t require extra vaccine doses, therefore Romania’s desperate attempt to leave the impression humanitarian aid by donating were futile. Furthermore, in addition to the more than 7 million doses crammed into warehouses, Romania committed to purchasing another 50 million doses. They will be procured at the expense of Romanians money, even more, the vaccines will also be destroyed.
