The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has asked Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to carefully analyse the impact of the announced austerity measures in order to prevent possible abuses against citizens.
FACIAS believes that rebalancing the country's economy "on the backs of citizens" is in itself an abuse and therefore it must be reminded at every opportunity that one of the most important roles the state has is to protect its citizens. In the current context it is about ensuring a decent standard of living and trying to avoid further burdening citizens.
FACIAS suggested identifying future alternative measures that would both help balance the budget without contributing to a lowering of the living standards of the population. There are enough well-trained macroeconomic experts in Romania whose opinions can be consulted and, where appropriate, applied.
Respect for citizens' rights, whatever their nature, is one of the foundations of a functioning democratic society.
