The Foundation For The Defense Of The Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has called for urgent investigations to clarify both the causes of death and the handling of the case of the 25-year-old man injured in a road accident on January 2, 2026, in Vernești. He died after three days of hospitalization at the Buzău County Emergency Hospital, without undergoing the necessary surgery for the serious fracture he suffered.
In this context, FACIAS called on the Ministry of Health to urgently carry out an inspection at the Buzău County Emergency Hospital, as well as to identify and hold accountable all those responsible for the tragedy.
At the same time, FACIAS has notified the Romanian College of Physicians, asking for a disciplinary procedure to be launched in order to establish the exact professional responsibilities in this case and to verify whether the medical decisions taken regarding Gabriel Bumbăcea complied with the standards of good medical practice.
Another referral has been made to the Buzău Public Health Department for an urgent investigation to determine whether the clinical protocols applicable to severe trauma were followed in the case of the young man.
According to the data made public, Gabriel Bumbăcea was a passenger in a car that was involved in a head-on collision. The young man suffered a femur fracture and was hospitalized at the Buzău County Emergency Hospital, in the Orthopedics ward, where he was immobilized and kept under observation. Although the accident occurred on Friday, January 2, the surgery was not performed urgently and the patient was practically left without surgery during the whole weekend.
Hospital officials stated that the closed femur fracture would not represent an immediate medical emergency and that the patient was not scheduled for surgery until Monday, January 5, 2026. Femur fractures can be associated with serious risks, such as fat embolism, thromboembolism and other life-threatening complications that quickly turn life-threatening without proper intervention and monitoring.
On January 5, 2026, in the morning, just a few hours before the scheduled surgery, Gabriel Bumbăcea's health deteriorated suddenly and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where he died.
This action is part of the FACIAS campaign on medical malpractice liability reform in Romania. FACIAS will monitor the investigation in this case until the culprits are held to account.
