The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) will participate on 6 September 2023 in a major conference in Brussels on "Ensuring the Rule of Law in EU Member States - Challenges and Solutions", held in the European Parliament.
The conference is organised by Romanian MEP Maria Grapini, as a member of the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament, at the initiative of FACIAS. The event will be attended by experts from Romania and Brussels, representatives of the media and Fernando Lopez Aguilar, Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), will be the speaker.
FACIAS will participate in the debate as a special guest and also as a representative of Romanian civil society and will present a report produced this year entitled: "Citizens' rights in Romania".
Report on how the rights of Romanians are respected
The document to be presented by FACIAS is organised in different sections according to the categories of citizens' rights identified and identifies the institutions responsible for managing the implementation of these rights, as well as the types of abuses and ways in which these rights are not respected. The report also aims to provide an overview of implementation of fundamental rights in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the report will investigate the measures taken by the authorities during the pandemic and their impact on citizens' rights, such as freedom of movement, the right to privacy and the impact on the economy and jobs.
This report is also intended to be a useful tool for all state institutions in Romania in order to help them identify areas of activity prone to abuse and to correct procedures in time so that relations with citizens are not affected.
The debates will examine the effectiveness of existing mechanisms that ensure the functioning of the rule of law, as well as the strategies and potential reforms needed to strengthen the rule of law and the fundamental rights of citizens.
