The Foundation For The Defense Of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has filed an application to intervene in the SCM case, in which the Judicial Inspectorate's request for the suspension of Judge Ancuța Popoviciu from her post is being considered, pending the final resolution of the disciplinary action.

FACIAS demands the suspension of the Mangalia judge and her exclusion from the judiciary, thus supporting the fight against abuses of the judicial system.

On 24 April, the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) will consider the Judicial Inspection's request for the exclusion from the judiciary of Judge Ancuța Popoviciu, who is presiding over the case in which Vlad Pascu, under the influence of drugs, is accused of killing two young people in the town of 2 Mai. On 23 February 2024, FACIAS petitioned the Judicial Inspection and the SCM to exclude the judge from the judiciary due to her unprofessional conduct and flagrant negligence in the courtroom during this case. During the initial court hearing on 22 February 2024, Judge Popoviciu provoked public outrage and deep indignation by inquiring in the courtroom as to whether one of the deceased youths was present, demonstrating a profound lack of familiarity with the case she was presiding over.

A conviction without evidence.

The SCM's response to this situation is of particular importance, as it will serve to indicate the standards of integrity and professionalism that are expected of magistrates serving in the Romanian justice system. The FACIAS action is part of the "No conviction without evidence" campaign, which aims to combat abuses in the Romanian justice system caused by the lack of professionalism of magistrates. It is imperative that the supervisory institutions fulfill their obligations in a responsible manner and prevent further instances of judicial abuse that have affected thousands of individuals over the past decade, as evidenced by a FACIAS report.
