The Foundation for the Defense of the Citizen Against State Abuses (FACIAS) welcomes the European initiative on the European Health Data Space (EHDS), a digital health innovation project.
As announced a few months ago, FACIAS is running a project in Romania, "The Romanian patient - fair laws and maximum transparency", which has among its objectives the digitisation and creation of a virtual health space where patients have access to all information related to their health. From the financial contributions paid to how this money was spent, including online access to medical records.
In practical terms, the EU-wide project confirms the importance of the FACIAS approach, as digitisation in health is a natural step towards transparency and making it easier for patients to access essential information about themselves.
At the moment, an electronic medical record exists in Romania, but using it is a difficult and counter-intuitive process, with which even many doctors are not familiar.
Therefore, FACIAS proposes that, until the EHDS project is implemented, Romania should adopt the Finnish model of digitisation in healthcare, which also serves as an inspiration for the EHDS. Given that EHDS will be completed, according to the project, in about a decade, the Romanian state has the opportunity to act faster for the benefit of all patients in Romania.
FACIAS is a non-governmental, non-profit and apolitical organisation, strategic partner of the Council of Europe and the European Commission through the European Association for Local Democracy (ALDA), which emerged in 2008 and specialises in human rights advocacy. Our main concern and work is to defend citizens against state abuses and we act as a member of CIVICUS (World Alliance for Citizen Participation) and FRA (European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights).
