One of the most difficult lessons of the last 30 years was discovering that the Romanian state is only a mediocre administrator. The rule is that the state's \"efficiency\" is only really visible when we consider how public money is wasted and squandered.<\/p>\n

That is why FACIAS (Foundation for the Defense of Citizens Against State Abuse) has launched an awareness campaign about the state's waste of public funds.<\/p>\n

We have always heard that \"it's not about money,\" but a few simple calculations show that huge sums of money have been spent from the public budget in Romania, and yet we still have severely underdeveloped sectors such as health and infrastructure. We have an embarrassingly low annual highway construction rate, and what is there left to say about new state hospitals and clinics? We all know how many were constructed.<\/p>\n

The Romanian state, waste champion, has the ability to waste Romanians' money and reveals a gross lack of respect for them through public spending. For example, the Romanian government squandered millions of dollars on SARS-COV-2 vaccines that went unused or expired. The money that was misused on these vaccines could have been used to construct a new hospital, which would have been beneficial given the state of the public health system. We believe that public funds are being spent without regard for the benefit of citizens, and that campaigns to purchase vaccines could be much more elaborately planned for the current circumstances.<\/p>\n

The infrastructure situation is even worse. The projects are delayed, messed up, and renegotiated to the point where we end up losing hundreds of millions of euros as a result of the mockery of some. For example, despite being one of the country's most important routes, the section of the A1 highway between Sibiu and Pitesti has remained in the same incomplete state for years. However, the Romanian government spent more than 100 million euros on a feasibility study to begin its construction, which has since expired. Now, the construction of this highway has yet to start, and citizens are unable to benefit from it, while the state has lost 100 million euros.<\/p>\n

The Romanian government has spent hundreds of millions of euros on fines paid to the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) and the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union). Over 99 million million euros were paid as compensations following Romania's convictions at the ECHR between 2004 and 2021, with over 34 million euros paid in the last two years. Naturally, all of this money came from the state budget. As a result, the citizens' funds was used to compensate the governments incompetence.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Public money does not belong to the state, but to the people. Every leu should be spent with one goal in mind: what benefit it provides to citizens. We decided to launch this campaign to show the population how their money is spent and that a change is required to put an end to this phenomenon. FACIAS stands with the people and will continue to support them in their fight against state abuses.<\/p>\n
